On Wednesday 27th March, all year 13 students from Longfield Academy who are not going onto University had the opportunity to participate in mock apprenticeship interviews.
We were fortunate to have the help and expertise of many business individuals as interviewers from A4G Accountants, National Grid, KATO, John Lewis Partnership and IMP Education.
As part of a whole process and following on from previous mock interviews and C.V workshops, students “applied” for these mock interviews in several sectors according to their own proposed destination: I.T, Accountancy, Hospitality, Business Administration, HR and Sports. Each student pre submitted a C.V and covering letter for their interview.
Students looked very smart on the day and interviewers commented on their levels of confidence.
A summary of the comments and advice to students from our interviewers is per below:
- All personable, likeable
- Ensure that they sell themselves well
- How to close an interview
- Query re how to conduct a telephone interview
- Add hobbies to C.V
- Competency based questions- demonstrate skills and experience
- Strengths related to job specification
- Know factors affecting industry
- Be prepared
- Where students see themselves in 5 years?
- Demonstrate that they value the employer
This event really grasped the attention of our students and provided them with constructive feedback and guidance to help them be more confident in future interviews. We asked the students for some comments:
“I found the event really useful. I was nervous before I went in but realised I could answer the questions which boosted my confidence”
“The interviewer was firm but fair and would not accept closed responses. She wanted more from me which made me think harder about the answers I gave.”
“I now feel more confident going into an interview”.
