The Leigh Academy hosted the latest FSB Skills 30:30 Event, on Friday 18th January.  Just over 30 year 13 students took the opportunity to participate in this highly successful initiative which brings a varied range of business sectors into the academy to engage with students.

Workshops

Alison Parmar from the FSB hosted a useful networking opportunity with a round table where delegates had the opportunity to discuss their businesses, employing young people and entering the world of work. Within a thoughtful and inspiring presentation, Lisa Settle of Telcare discussed recruitment as a topic for business elaborating upon her own entry into the working world and best practices that her own company has utilised.

Meanwhile, students enjoyed an insightful workshop with Paul Andrews, CEO of Jobs in Kent.  Topics discussed included how the job market has changed, apprenticeships, financial technology, entrepreneurship, applying for a job and using professional platforms such as LinkedIn.

The students enjoyed the session, with comments including:

“I enjoyed listening to Paul and found his information extremely useful.”

“… Paul is such a talented speaker.”

Speed Networking

After the individual workshops, business delegates and students came together for a session of facilitated ‘speed networking’.  Students took the opportunity to talk to guests about their own career aspirations and plans and to find out about the delegates career journeys and businesses.

Free Networking

The event concluded with 10 minutes of ‘free networking’, with many students staying on past the event end timing to talk with business delegates and benefit from their industry expertise and advice.

Feedback

Students all agreed that the session with Paul and the speed networking had been very useful, with comments including:

“I really enjoyed it.”

“The speed networking was most useful”

“The speed networking session worked really well as I felt I had spoken to a range of extremely knowledgeable professionals and had a lot of my questions answered.”

Business delegate comments included:

“Having attended another 3030 Skills event with the FSB and Leigh Academy, I would like to say how beneficial I believe these sessions to be.  Bringing business owners and students together enables both sides to get a good picture of how it is from the other’s perspective. Many of the students had excellent communication skills and were a lot more knowledgeable about their options than I was at their age.  One young man completely amazed me with his plan for moving beyond school. What a pleasure it was to meet them all. “

“It was a great event, I am happy to have been there. So much young talent that we were able to point in the right direction”

“ I had such a great time meeting other local business leaders and amazing students”

“It was a pleasure. It takes me back to a time when the thought of finding a job seemed daunting. I hope this session has helped the students and wish them luck in their future careers”.

Sincere thanks to Alison, The FSB, Paul, Lisa and all our business delegates in facilitating a most successful event.
