David, Marketing Manager for Bluewater, tells students about the centre, it’s history and ethos

Tuesday 14th January saw the launch of the Made in Bluewater Challenge. Hosted at the Bluewater Management Suite and facilitated by the Ahead Partnership, the launch saw teams of year 10 students from the Leigh UTC, Longfield Academy and The Leigh Academy attend to gain new insights and skills that will help them to complete the challenge which is very much focussed on sustainability.

Students first came together to gain a background on the centre itself and to receive a brief for the competition to come.

Over the next few weeks, they will work on ideas to design a refillable bottle design for Bluewater , a social media campaign, a presentation and a marketing pitch. Akin to one of the tasks in the BBCs T.V programme, The Apprentice, the winning team will go on to work with a top London design agency to bring their designs to life and 200 bottles will be produced for students to sell at Bluewater with profits going to a charity of their choice.


Previous winning designs

Explaining that Land Securities, owners of Bluewater, have run similar competitions at their shopping centres elsewhere in the U.K, students were also shown examples of previous winning designs. The focus here is on simplicity of design.

Students then broke into academy groups to participate in three masterclasses:

  • Marketing
  • Sales 
  • Environmental sustainability

The final of the challenge will be held on March 10th and we very much look forward to seeing the results of the students work!
