Year 11 at Strood Academy attended a Routes into Training event on Thursday 8th February. All 230 students within the year group had the opportunity to listen to a number of business delegates describing their sector and the training and onward career development opportunities offered.

After the presentations, delegates broke into a carousel similar to a trade exhibition giving students an opportunity to talk one to one at their stand.

Two of the highlights of the event were an impromptu round of applause given when Simon Flynn of the Trust’s resourcing team played a video of teachers explaining why they chose to go into teaching. The second highlight was at Aliaxis’ stand where students had the opportunity to see a 3D printer in operation.

The event was also supported by two Strood Academy governors, David Mead and Stan James. Sincere thanks to everyone who attended on the day to support our students.

One delegate, Deanne Walker of CER commented post event-

“Many thanks and I really enjoyed the afternoon.  It went very well and the students had a great mix of speakers.”

Although not the first time that it has been run within the Trust, this was the first time that Routes into Training has been run for year 11 as opposed to post 16 students and for such a large group.

As such, feedback from other delegates reflected this “My view is that it would be worth the students hearing generic information eg what an apprenticeship is or is not and the various routes into training and then spending more time speaking with the employers present. However, the conversations that I did have were good. “ – June Wilkinson, BAM Construction
