Thank you to Clive Simmonds of BAE Systems, Rochester, for his workshop at Tree Tops Primary Academy as part of the Year 5 and 6 space exploration topic. Pupils benefitted from industry input to embed their learning on the history and future of space exploration which included looking at key scientific figures as well as past, current and future technology.

The group of 40 students had the practical opportunity to look at flight by making their own paper helicopters and discussed what is needed to explore space as an entity. Clive brought along printed circuit boards from current aircraft flight control computers as well as an example of the world’s most advanced pilot’s helmet fitted with their visor display system. Students went on to explore the qualities and qualifications needed to become an engineer at a company such as BAE Systems which supplies the technology of the future. Students were engaged and well behaved throughout the one and three quarter hour workshop.
