Leigh Academies Trust (LAT) is an educational organisation of currently 25 academies for students between the ages of 3 and 18. It is based within four clusters, in and around Dartford, Medway, Maidstone / Tonbridge and Greenwich / Bexley.

Through our work we seek to work closely with all parts of our community – parents, families, other schools, universities and businesses – to enhance opportunities and outcomes for every student.

Hence the motto of Leigh Academies Trust is: Shaping Lives, Transforming Communities.

What we stand for:

  • High ideals, strong moral values and boundless ambition to achieve excellence for all;
  • Strong collaboration and teamwork so that we are much greater than the sum of our parts.

What we value:

  • A ‘can-do’ attitude towards continuous improvement and innovation;
  • Creating confident young adults with high levels of resilience and integrity.

What makes us distinctive:

  • Small-school, ‘human-scale’ education to personalise the educational experience;
  • An enterprising culture to create close partnerships with industry and other educators.

The role that businesses play within Leigh Academies Trust in transforming the life chances of our students is huge. One crucial area to which you or your business could contribute is that of academy governing boards. Each board has governors, who bring to this role a wide range of knowledge, skills and experience. Some are parents, some educationalists, but many others are businessmen and women who have no direct link to an academy.

The role of a governor is to work in partnership as a critical friend with the academy leadership team, enhancing continuously the standards of achievement, progress and welfare provision for all students, and through this to enable the academy board to discharge its three core functions:

  1. Setting Strategic Direction
    1. Delegating operational matters to the Principal;
    2. Engaging parents and other stakeholders;
    3. Ensuring statutory requirements are met.
  2. Managing School Performance
    1. Holding the executive accountable for raising standards;
    2. Using data to challenge and support;
    3. Ensuring the safety and welfare of all students.
  3. Ensuring Financial Standards
    1. Rigorous auditing and risk management;
    2. Focusing strongly on the efficient use of resources and ensuring value for money;
    3. Ensuring statutory requirements are met.

Through their experience, governors are able to contribute, in such areas as leadership, finance, HR, marketing, IT, health and building management, to the decision-making process of the board.

Leigh Academies Trust is keen to hear from people who have a passion for making a difference to the lives of young people, and consequently to the communities in which they live.
