Sincere thanks to June Wilkinson of BAM Construction for delivering a virtual assembly to Post 16 students on careers within the construction sector.
Beginning by showing a Go Construct video as an overview of careers with the construction sector, June then went on to talk about the specifics of BAM Construction, and it’s areas of expertise. There are over 160 different job roles within the sector which range across the entire build process from concept to a completed building, to the maintenance of that building. Surprisingly to some, the initial design and implementation process can be longer than the actual build itself. June emphasised the importance of sustainable building and the move to digital construction.

June then spoke about the skills needed to work within the sector:
- Good with people
- Organisation and planning
- Problem solving
- Technical knowledge
- IT Skills
She also explained that construction has a lot of job satisfaction to offer career wise with the opportunity to work on interesting projects and to see them through to fruition.
Talking about the entry routes into construction, June explained that there are support staff jobs available as well as university and apprenticeship routes. Apprentices are taken on at age 16 and age 18 and the process is application, online or telephone interview and then an assessment centre. She explained how assessment centres work and what candidates should expect from attending.
BAM Construction will be opening their current apprenticeship scheme this month with applications closing at the end of December.
June further stressed the importance of applicants proving that they have used their time productively; one way might be by completing virtual work experience; BAM has and will continue to provide such opportunities.
Thank you to June and BAM Construction for such a useful presentation.
